What is an air conditioning pump?

An air conditioning pump is used to evacuate condensates produced by the refrigerating fluid of the device. Its installation is essential when gravity or natural evacuation towards the wastewater system is impossible. Whether it is a reversible or traditional air conditioner, a monobloc, split air conditioning unit, or even a heat pump, the removal of condensates is essential to avoid any water leakage.

What is the air conditioning pump used for? Why take care of condensate removal? How to choose a pump for an AC unit? Find all the answers below.

An introduction to the air conditioning pump

Air conditioners produce condensation. This cooling process creates condensates, which require draining. The condensate removal pump is to be set up near an indoor unit.

When the air conditioner is on, it draws in moisture from the room to cool it down. Because of condensation, water droplets form and later pour into the condensate tray. Water then goes back through the home's drainage system via a pipe. The air conditioning pump is used to drain water that accumulates when the air conditioning system is on. Said system comprises a small pump linked to a sensor. It is most often a floater, used to detect the water level and trigger the evacuation pump's auto-starter at the right time.

Why set up an air conditioning pump?

Air conditioning always generates water. This typical process results from the condensation phase inherent to producing fresh air.

This condensation must be evacuated, either by a gravity system or by utilizing a lifting pump.

In the absence of a suitable pump or the event of its malfunctioning, the air conditioner begins to leak. That implies that the condensate tray is filled to its maximum, which may get clogged up by limescale or dust.

How to pick an air conditioning pump?

Several elements must be taken into account when picking the right air conditioning pump.

The type of air conditioning unit

Air conditioning pump models vary, depending on the type of air conditioner: ceiling cassette air conditioner, fixed, mobile, monobloc air conditioner, wall-mounted, reversible, or split air conditioning systems.

The strength of the air conditioner

The cooling capacity of an air conditioner is proportional to the number of condensates it generates. It is, therefore, necessary to understand that to better optimize condensation drainage.

The weather conditions you live in

In a humid climate, the formation of condensates is more elevated than in drier climates. Knowing this, it is, therefore, necessary to pick a pump that is of the appropriate size.

Setting up a vacuum pump

There are different location possibilities when setting up an air conditioner pump. It can be installed within the device, above it, below it, or at the same level.

SFA's air conditioner pumps

SFA, a specialist in sanitary comfort, is at the forefront of innovation regarding vacuuming pumps for air conditioning systems. Three condensate-removal models from the Saniclim range can meet your needs and requirements: the Sanicondens Clim Deco pump, the Sanicondens Clim Pack S pump, and the Sanicondens Clim Mini S pump. The grease trap: an introduction

A grease trap is a piece of equipment used to filter out polluting matter originating from culinary activities, such as fats, oils, and macro waste before they make it to the sewer network. It is a device whose function is to block fat and waste from getting through. This grease separation process takes place upstream of the discharge of wastewater into the sewer network. The objective is to avoid polluting waterways and obstructing ducts. The grease trap is a compact device that can be buried or placed above ground. A buriable fat separator is usually a communal kitchen's feature of choice. This is the case, for example, for a company or school's cafeteria, hospitals, nursing or retirement homes, etc. Fat separators are usually used as restaurant kitchen equipment. A grease trap operates as follows: installed right before the wastewater draining pipe, it disbands fats and oils when they enter the degreaser. They then rise to the surface, while large particles (such as food remains) drop at the bottom of the tank. The depolluted water is then discharged through a dedicated outlet into the pipes towards the sewer network or a house's septic tank.

When should you set up a grease trap?

As we have seen, it is mandatory for any establishment that generates greasy or oily food waste to get a grease trap set up. What equipment to choose depends on the type of kitchen. A distinction is usually made between:

       ◾ The grease trap for catering services. This one is adapted to an important daily influx. This trap is available in a ready-to-use or buriable version;

       ◾ The mobile restaurant grease trap. This one is suitable for food service stands, food trucks, small restaurants, etc. This equipment is generally intended for kitchens with a portable dishwasher;

       ◾ The grease trap for restaurant dishwashers. This one is available in various variations and handles waste from 1 to 100-guest restaurants.

Be sure to think of setting up your grease trap with care. Whether on the ground or buried, the equipment must remain readily accessible. It is necessary to ensure maintenance of the grease separator by draining and cleaning its tank regularly. The frequency at which you need to empty the grease trap ranges from two to five times a year, depending on the number of guests. Greasy waste must be collected following a specific process. You can hire a company that specializes in such a service. Feel free to ask around for several quotes to compare the prices and services offered before making a decision.

Finally, note that you are entitled to subsidies from either the Chamber of Commerce and Industry in your department of residence or the local Water Agency. Under certain conditions, these subsidies are even approved upon purchasing and setting up a kitchen degreaser.

If you do not own any restaurant, you are not expected to set up a grease separator in your home. Do not, however, pour frying oils into your kitchen sink, as to avoid damaging/obstructing your piping system and generating odors.

SFA's grease traps

A renowned specialist in the treatment of professional and domestic wastewater, SFA has designed a complete range of tanks and grease separators. Our various devices meet all professional kitchens’ grease-processing needs for cooking oils and organic waste.

Here is a quick overview:

The Sanigrease S grease trap

There are four versions of the Sanigrease S communal kitchen grease trap available. You get to choose different separator or desilter compartment capacities and whether or not you want an integrated ventilation system to go with it. This wastewater-degreasing equipment is suitable for catering kitchens serving up to 443 daily meals. Its compact 30-inch width allows for easy set-up and maintenance. Lastly, the DN 110 drainage pipe of the Sanigrease S grease trap facilitates the collecting of heavy waste.

The Sanigrease SU grease trap

Also intended for communal kitchens, the buriable Sanigrease SU grease trap is available in five versions. They come with desilter capacities ranging from 100 to 400 liters, while their total tank volumes vary from 340 to 1,500 liters. Once again, the diameter of the draining pipe is sufficient to recover all macro waste present in the water.

The Sanigrease T24 grease trap

This grease trap is suitable for frost-free installations in smaller kitchens. The Sanigrease T24 mobile grease trap can be easily placed under a professional sink or connected to a portable dishwasher. Its tank has a total capacity of 24 liters, and the maximum oil content volume that it can handle is 8 liters. It is, therefore, necessary to conduct proper daily emptying of this degreaser and carry out regular cleaning.

The Sanigrease T grease trap

Lastly, to equip your professional kitchen, SFA presents you with a grease trap especially made for restaurant dishwashing. It consists of a stainless steel tank with a 304-liter capacity. The device stands far away from the ground to better optimize hygiene.

Maintenance is facilitated by the presence of drain valves and by the removable peelings basket. Four models compose our range of grease traps, all with different handling capacities:

       ◾ For a kitchen serving 1 to 40 guests, choose the Sanigrease T 40;

       ◾ For a kitchen serving 41 to 60 guests, choose the Sanigrease T 60;

       ◾ For a kitchen serving 61 to 80 guests, choose the Sanigrease T 80;

       ◾ For a kitchen serving 81 to 100 guests, choose the Sanigrease T 100.

An overview of the cellar pump

The submersible pump for wastewater disposal consists of different components. The main structuring element is the engine, then the turbine, the floater, the connector, and the several-input base. The latter is the receptacle on which the submersible pump rests. The upper opening is more or less wide depending on the models and the nature of the water to be pumped, whether clear or dirty. The pump is meant to retain large particles and prevent damage to the device. Ultimately, once submerged, this equipment can be activated either automatically or manually to suck up water until delivery height is reached.

Cellar pumps are, by definition, intended to empty, flooded, closed rooms, but not solely. Here are their various uses:

Clearing flooding

Following harsh weather or domestic water damage, your cellar, garage, or basement can fill up with water. Once immersed, the pump allows you to empty the room and release the water outside.

Emptying a pool

It is possible to use a vacuum pump to remove water from a pool or spa. If you are buying a submersible pump for this specific purpose, check on its throughput capability. It should be proportional to the time required to carry out the emptying. Additionally, the pressure delivered by this type of device is comparable to that of a garden hose.

Drying up a soaked surface

This is when the name "mop pump" makes total sense. Following heavy storms, a car park or the roof of a building can gorge with water. A cellar pump is then the ideal tool for drying them up.

Here, you should take note that the vacuum pump is inappropriate for evacuating particularly dirt-laden wastewater, that is, containing sand or solid particles. It is rainwater or household water that is, in most occurrences, pumped with the help of this specific pump. Therefore, its use is merely occasional in case of flooded premises or the emptying of a spa, basin, swimming pool, sump, or septic tank.

How to choose your cellar pump?

To select the model of cellar pump that best suits you, consider the following parameters: the location of the device, the nature of the water to be pumped, and the delivery height.

The location of the vacuum pump

Picking a cellar pump depends, first of all, on where you want the device set up. It can be set in cisterns, such as a sump or tank. In this case, choose a small model with a compatible diameter to dip it in entirely. When the tank is too narrow, the solution is then to opt for a pump without an external floater. An alternative location for a vacuum pump is the basement. To optimize the drying, check whether the bearing surface is either flat or low-leveled.

The type of wastewater to drain

The second element to take into account is the nature of the water to be vacuumed. In any case, whichever model it is, a cellar pump is not intended to vacuum solids-containing wastewater. This type of pump is used to drain clear water, wastewater, or dirt-laden water. That said, there are differences in granulometry from one device to the next. When particle diameter ranges from ⩽5 mm, you are dealing with a clean-water pump. Some water carries particles of a diameter between 6 to 20 mm; when lightly dirt-laden, you then should opt for a wastewater pump. Finally, a 20 mm granulometry device is what you need to drain heavily-laden wastewater.

The delivery height

The last criterion to consider before picking your cellar pump is the delivery height or the wading depth. Here is a quick explanation to fully understand how the device works. To install a pump in a water-filled space, you must connect it to an elevated electrical outlet. Then, gently tie the pump to a rope and lower it until completely immersed. The submersible pump, which comes equipped with a floater, will automatically detect the presence of water and turn itself on to start pumping vertically. It is, therefore, necessary that there be enough depth for the drying to take place. Note that whenever the water level is too low for the device to detect, you will need to switch it on manually.

SFA's cellar pumps

For decades since 1958, SFA's been gaining expertise in home and business premise sanitary comfort solutions. SFA's range of Sanisub pumping stations for the emptying of premises or basins is at the forefront of innovation.

Air conditioners are a perfect remedy for the heat that is becoming more and more frequent. Placed in your living room, it lets the atmosphere pass through and is not affected by the effects of the furnace. For your air conditioner to work optimally, you must drain all condensate.

Evaporation of air conditioner condensate: The Reason

The air conditioner produces steam when these substances become liquid due to heat; the residue is called condensate. This liquid is toxic and must be disposed of. Regulations prohibit the discharge of condensate into the wastewater. For this reason, it is necessary to install a lifting system to bring this discharge in the false ceiling.

Drain condensate from the air conditioner: Two Solutions

SFA's expertise allows us to offer you three lifting systems for your air conditioner:

Sanicondens Clim Mini S is a small pump easily integrated into your wall-mounted air conditioner. Silent works in two steps: first, the condensates will arrive in the detector and then be emptied by a suction pump.

The Sanicondens Pro V.02 is the complete solution for draining acidic condensate from gas and oil boilers (using Sanineutral or Sanineutral mini), floor and wall mounted units, refrigerated display cabinets, air conditioners, air conditioner cassettes and dehumidifiers.

Each of these solutions is easy to install.

Supplied with numbered and schematically illustrated instructions, you can easily integrate it into your wall-mounted air conditioning system. You can refer to the specifications of the condensate drainage system on the website. SFA experts will also advise you on the best way to customize. Our know-how is supported by a national network of after-sales services able to answer your questions.

Setting up a gas-condensation boiler to heat your home requires that you take precautions. Among said precautions, it is necessary that acids produced by the device be processed appropriately. A condensing boiler produces steam residues during its combustion activity called condensates. This very acidic waste cannot be expelled into either the public or private sewer network unless processed first. Otherwise, they would contribute to environmental pollution. SFA offers simple and effective solutions for condensate neutralization. In addition, when gravity-based drainage of the house sewage system is not possible, one must install a condensate removal pump. What is a boiler pump? How to choose the right sump pump? What pump models are available? Below is the answer!

Boiler condensate draining

For optimal performance, a condensation boiler recycles the calories produced by the water vapors during gas combustion. When these vapors go to a liquid state, they release heat, which enters the water heater exchanger. The water production that results from this condensation process is called condensates. Due to their high acidity content, it is primordial to get them correctly discharged toward the sewage system. To do this, there exists two solutions. The first is to set up a wastewater gravity drain outside of one's home. Gravitational flow is, however, only possible if your heating device is heightened. The second option is a real deal breaker: all there is to do is couple your boiler with a pump. The pump will allow condensate adjusting and their safe discharging outdoors. This device is all the more practical, as it can be put in place without carrying out heavy-duty work.

An introduction to boiler pumps

A pump is used to drain out condensates whenever there is no gravity drain, when the slope for wastewater draining towards the sewage system proves to be too low, that is. Having a condensate pump set up makes it possible to safely drain the acidity both gas and fuel combustion emit. The condensates are sent outdoors through a discharge pipe set at the proper lift height based on the layout of the premises. A normally-operating 25 kW boiler produces approximately 1.5 liters of condensates an hour. This quantity, far from being negligible, must imperatively be drained.

How to pick your boiler pump?

Depending on your needs, there are various types of boiler pumps.

  1. Do you want a condensate removal solution, an acid neutralization system, or both?
  2. Would you like a pump discreetly placed under a wall-mounted boiler or a floor-standing boiler model with integrated neutralization?
  3. Do you need a one-only input pump or several to connect other devices to it?
  4. Also, take the future location of your device into account, whether it is noticeable or placed near any living space, that is. You might then need a discrete model.
  5. Finally, think about the manometric lift height and the horizontal pipe discharge. These two measurements must correspond to your set-up relative to the layout of the wastewater drainage network.

SFA's boiler pumps

For more than 60 years, SFA has been working for both individuals' and professionals' daily sanitary comfort. A renowned leader in the field, the group has continued to innovate over the following decades to optimize its products— with now one of SFA's areas of expertise being domestic and professional pumping solutions. Learn about the features of our five boiler pump models, so you can pick the model that best meets your needs. You can choose between the Sanicondens drainage pump range or the compact Sanineutral Mini model.

SFA's Sanicondens Deco+ pump

Silent, compact, and with a sober design, these are the three main features of the Sanicondens Deco+ boiler condensate pump. Its properties make it possible to connect the pump to a water heater completely unnoticed. Its less than 25 dB(A) sound level makes it perfect for its set-up in a small open space, such as a kitchen. This model provides a flow rate of 10 liters per hour and comes with a 175ml tank. It is suitable for the pumping and draining of condensates from a condensation boiler with a maximum power of 25 kW. Its condensate lift height is up to 19 feet, while the horizontal discharge extends over 196 feet. It is a single-input device, meant to be coupled with a heating unit. The Sanicondens Deco+ drainage pump comes with a 2-year warranty and the following features:

       ◾ A wall-mounting kit;

       ◾ Cover screw caps.

SFA's Sanicondens Best Flat pump

The Sanicondens Best Flat is a floor-standing boiler pump with low input to facilitate plugging. Its main characteristic is to provide a complete, integrated condensate-neutralization solution. This model is efficient and comes equipped with three additional inputs for coupling with three other air conditioning, heating, or dehumidification devices. The low noise level of less than 45 dB(A) allows this drainage pump to be set up anywhere, especially since it can be discreetly placed on the floor or mounted on the wall. Before it starts pumping condensates, the system neutralizes water pH with the help of aggregate composites. The starter kit comes with a bag of aggregate composites, which must be replaced every 12 months. This way, your home evacuation ducts remain safe from acid corrosion. Its lifting height is 14 feet, and its length is 164 feet. The Sanicondens Best Flat drainage pump comes with a 2-year warranty and the following features:

       ◾ Input and output adapters;

       ◾ An alarm cable;

       ◾ A 5-foot-long power cable;

       ◾ A non-return valve;

       ◾ Condensate-neutralizing aggregate composites;

       ◾ A 16-foot-long drain hose.

SFA's Sanicondens Eco v02 pump

Thanks to its two inputs, this condensate pump for gas or oil-powered boilers can also pump and drain air conditioner or dual-flow ventilation system wastewater. In this second version of the model, set-up is facilitated for wall or floor-mounting usage (mounting screws provided). This drainage pump is discreet due to its compact dimensions and low noise level. The tank capacity is 2.2 liters. Once filled, the integrated floater triggers a condensate-filled water discharge. Its discharge distance is up to 14 feet vertically and 164 feet horizontally. The Sanicondens Eco v02 drainage pump comes with a 2-year warranty and the following features:

       ◾ Input and output adapters;

       ◾ A 5-foot-long power cable;

       ◾ A non-return valve;

       ◾ A 16-foot-long drain hose;

       ◾ Mounting screws.

SFA's Sanicondens Pro v02 pump

The Sanicondens Pro v02 is a professional condensate pump. Thanks to its two inputs, you can simultaneously couple it with a boiler and an air conditioner. Both compact and silent, this drainage pump has a large 2,2-liter tank. This large volume makes it possible to reduce the number of times the engine boots, thus extending its lifespan. With a flow rate of 6.2 l/min, this pump can propel condensates up to 164 feet in length and 14 feet in height. The complete fixing kit this pump comes with facilitates its set-up. The Sanicondens Pro v02 drainage pump comes with a 2-year warranty and the following features:

       ◾ Input and output adapters;

       ◾ A rubber plug;

       ◾ A 5-foot-long long power cable;

       ◾ A pre-connection cable for the alarm;

       ◾ A 16-foot-long drain hose;

       ◾ Mounting screws.

SFA's Sanineutral Mini neutralizer

You can set up the Sanineutral Mini condensate neutralizer if you are equipped with gravity drainage. This device is suitable for gas boilers with a power of up to 25 kW. The Sanineutral Mini also has an extra input. This allows you to connect it to the front of one of the heating-system pump models. Its minimalist format allows it to be set up discreetly and without hindrance. The function of this device is to remove acidity present in your condensate-laden water heater before they get expelled into the drainage ducts. This way, you preserve the lining of your piping system. A translucent window allows you to check the current number of neutralization aggregate composites left. The device maintenance is made easier by the presence of a removable cover. The Sanineutral Mini condensate neutralizer comes with a 2-year warranty and is shipped with the following features:

       ◾ Aggregate composites for condensate neutralization;

       ◾ Fixing brackets;

       ◾ Integrated siphon.

There are two different kinds of pumping stations for you to choose from: the ready-to-use and the buriable. The installation work differs depending on the model preferred. Since they are electrically powered and need to be wired, both stations require the expertise of an authorized electrician upon setting up. What is a pumping station, you ask? How does one go about choosing the most fitted one for their home? What are SFA's available pumping station models? Here are the answers!

An introduction to pumping stations

Both the ready-to-use and the buriable stations operate the same. At home, as wastewater gets used, it progressively flows through the pumping station. Whenever a determined threshold level is reached, an engine-powered turbine sucks it up to later evacuate it to the sewer network via a discharge pipe. Equipped with a shredding system, pumping stations make it possible to process and drain human waste. Once wastewater is taken care of, the whole process resumes: as the water level lowers, the floating sensor comes down. As we have already seen above, there are two types of pumping stations:

The ready-to-use pumping station

The ready-to-use pumping station is better suited for the disposal of wastewater from a bathroom situated below the primary wastewater system of the property, that is, in the basement, usually. Very little cumbersome, such a pumping station is best set up in the basement.

The buriable pumping station

By raising the wastewater level, the buriable pumping station helps with its discharging into the drainage network of the city. Buried only a few feet from the building it is linked to, such a station is best used when the premises are found below a city's sewage system. Unobtrusive, it is easily accessible for maintenance work.

How to pick your pumping station?

Whether personal or professional, to choose the pumping station that best meets your needs, you must consider the following elements:

       ◾ The problem at hand;
       ◾ The type of wastewater to process;
       ◾ Both the volume capacity and maximum total dynamic head of the station.

The issue at stake

Before picking your pumping station model, first, identify your needs. There are two types of scenarios at play, generally:

       ◾ You must clear wastewater from one or several other shower rooms located below your home drain system (e.g., the basement laundry room) or outside your building (e.g., outdoor kitchen, pool house). A ready-to-use station is your best bet in this case.
       ◾ Your premises are either below or far enough away from the city drainage network: therefore, a buriable pumping station is recommended.

The different types of wastewater to drain

The pumping station must be compatible with the kind of wastewater that is to be pumped out into the sewerage network: gray water, black water, human waste, etc. Moreover, its use will be different depending on whether it is used privately or professionally.

The volume capacity of the pumping station

Volume capacity refers to the amount of water a pumping station tank can hold. It is primordial that it corresponds to your actual needs to prevent the pump from overexertion. It is typical to choose a 100-liter tank for a five-room home. Each additional room accounts for an extra volume of 25 liters. Note that the system capacity is proportional to the pump output.

The maximum total dynamic head of the pumping station

Commonly referred to as lift height, the total manometric size of the pumping station plays an essential part. It varies depending on how your home or professional premises are laid out. This measure is calculated based on the distance separating the pumping station from the sewer network. In addition to the height, the horizontal distance is also to be taken into account.

Other characteristics of a pumping station

In addition to the above, other criteria come in handy when picking the right pumping station. These include engine power and usage, noise level, number of inputs, maximum inflowing wastewater temperature, etc.

Pumping station accessories

Lastly, pick a pumping station that comes with the necessary accessories for its proper functioning, namely: a non-return valve, a sleeve, and connectors. You can also opt for a model with an alarm box, either remote or not.

How can a toilet be installed at home when the space allocated for it is situated below the sewerage network? How can a bathroom be added to a room without standard water distribution pipes? There exists a solution: the toilet grinder. The macerator toilet is the ideal device to remedy all the physical difficulties of setting up classic toilets. Thanks to such a system, you can set up a restroom anywhere in your home or at your business premises, regardless of their layout. The only prerequisite is a stable water supply, a wastewater drainage pipeline (even of small diameter), and an electrical outlet. SFA, the inventor of the Sanibroyeur, has been working for decades to optimize sanitary comfort in buildings. SFA's Sanibroyeur range consists of various toilet grinder models meant to meet all possible demands. You have a choice between two types of devices:

       ◾ A Grinder that is connectable to a toilet bowl commonly called a toilet grinder;

       ◾ A toilet with an integrated grinder, which is a toilet bowl with a grinder within its support frame.

Each piece of equipment is available in various sleek-design models that blend anywhere: a multi-input macerator toilet that can accommodate several pieces of equipment and pump wastewater from the entire room it is set up in; a compact-size toilet easily integrable; a grinder-integrated toilet with a double-flushing mechanism. It is up to you to pick the sanitary grinder that suits your needs and demands.

Set up a toilet in your home using a toilet grinder

A macerator toilet is a toilet bowl with a specific eliminating device associated with an electric engine. The built-in grinder toilet makes it possible to break up matter present in wastewater and clear it into the sewage systems. The device makes it possible to address several set-up constraints, some of them being:

- An evacuation slope that is too low;

- The absence of a specific evacuation duct (100 mm in diameter);

- A remote sewer network.

You can create an additional toilet in your attic or basement using this product. Furthermore, you can set up a complete bathroom using a Sanibroyeur equipped with several inputs. You can use each to connect a washbasin, shower, bidet, toilet, etc.

Macerator toilet separate from the toilet bowl

You can add this shredder to any toilet bowl with a horizontal outlet. SFA, the inventor of the famous Sanibroyeur, offers many models to meet their customers' needs.

Integrated macerator toilet

This model of electric toilets consists of a grinder integrated into the toilet bowl. Both the grinder and bowl are sold conjointly, the two elements getting assembled simultaneously during manufacture. There are various models of free-standing and wall-mounted macerator toilets available in our line of products.

How the Sanibroyeur works

Setting up either type of toilet macerator does not require any heavy-duty work. The operating principle of a Sanibroyeur is simple, and its triggering is automatic. The built-in or independent shredder has an electrically-powered engine, hence the need to have a power outlet nearby. The device is connected from one side to a water input and from the other to a drain pipe. When a user flushes it, the engine grinds matter using an integrated cutter. Sewage can then be expelled through the discharge pipe, even when the latter is of small diameter.

To help you choose between the set-up of a toilet grinder and a toilet with an integrated grinder, several criteria can be taken into account, namely:

- Do you already have a toilet bowl for your installation?

- Would you like to set up either a floor-standing macerator toilet or a wall-mounted macerator toilet?

- Would you like to connect other sanitary equipment when setting up a shower room?
